It takes the shape of a place out west…

February 10, 2010

Since moving to the Bay Area in Cali, I’ve been enjoying the extra living space in our new home.  (Before, I was living in a tiny box which I justified since the apartment was located in the chic shopping mecca of SoHo.  Luckily for me, our building also had an elevator—a rare find in the area.)  While most of our decorating is complete within the three months since moving in, I’ve been lagging in the process of “beautifying” the guest bedroom.  I’ve gathered some ideas from HGTV, assessed what I already have, browsed some of my fav décor websites, and now I’ve got my checklist to get this looming project completed.

I’m using this modern décor along with the neutral color palette for inspiration.

  • Paint an accent color on one wall to instantly give the room a new look.
  • Purchase a new duvet cover that better matches the color of the paint.
  • Purchase two or three accent pillows that will highlight the more subtle colors of the room.
  • Finally hang the valance I bought about two months ago to add a romantic touch.
  • Update the overhead lighting to a cute mini chandelier. (Mini being the keyword here to not go too overboard with the romantic touches.)
  • Hang artwork and add a few framed pictures.
  • Purchase a new table lamp to encourage bedtime reading for my guests—of course I’ll have to include a copy of Cane River, one of my favorite books 🙂

Here are some of the décor items I’ve fallen for:

1. Bed Bath & Beyond: $100

2. Restoration Hardware: $545

3. JC Penny: $35

4. Pottery Barn: $180

5. Crate & Barrel: $200

6. Target: $35
